New Program Pilots
Recently we turned our attention to the future of Kesem and began dreaming about new ways to serve families who are not currently being supported by our programs, while reinforcing service for current Kesem families. Kesem is the leading national nonprofit that supports children affected by a parent’s cancer, and our vision is to reach the 5 million children eligible for our programs in the United States.
We embarked on a several month journey, rooted in our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) commitments, to gather insights and data that would thoughtfully inform how Kesem can serve more families across the country. We worked hard to develop a deep understanding of the personal stories of real families impacted by a cancer diagnosis and of current data from experts in the field.
With the wealth of collected information as our guide, we selected three leading concepts as the starting point for program modeling in the coming year. In alignment with our current offerings, these new programs will help children build resilience, confidence, and lasting feelings of hope and joy.
Club Kesem
Club Kesem BETA An age-based national virtual cohort for children and youth impacted by a parent’s cancer to build connections, relationships, and have fun with kids their age who are going through similar experiences. This program is offered by the national Kesem organization and staffed with alumni and student volunteers nationwide.
Kesem Better Days
Kesem Better Days BETA A full-day in-person program offered multiple times a year designed for children and youth to gather, connect, have fun, and reflect on their experiences with parental cancer. This program is offered by a local chapter staffed with student volunteers.
Kesem Gatherings
Kesem Gatherings BETA Local monthly get-togethers for children and youth to cultivate relationships and have fun with peers in their community who are also experiencing a parent’s cancer. This program is offered by a local chapter staffed with student volunteers.

Eligibility
What if my Kesem chapter is not offering one of the pilot programs, but I am interested in participating?
- If you have previously attended camp and that chapter isn’t hosting a pilot program, you can register with another chapter near you that is hosting the in-person program you’d like your child to participate in. Registration opens in December (returning families) and January (new families), simply select the chapter of your choice, and we will handle the rest.
You also have the option to register for our nationwide virtual offering, Club Kesem. Sign up here.
Can my child still attend Camp Kesem if my Kesem chapter is now hosting one of the new pilot programs?
-
If your Kesem chapter is now hosting one of the new pilot programs and you would like your child(ren) to attend Camp Kesem, you may switch to another local chapter offering camp. The majority of our chapters will still be hosting the traditional Camp Kesem programming, and we can support you in finding another chapter near you. Families can choose which program best fits their family’s needs.
Who can attend?
- Kesem serves youth ages 6-18 who have lost a parent to cancer, have a parent undergoing cancer treatment, or a parent who is a cancer survivor - an estimated population of over 5 million children in the United States. Exceptions may be made for siblings who are 5 years old, please reach out to your local chapter to inquire.
- When the term "parent" is used at Kesem, it includes any parent or guardian with primary or legal responsibility for a child. This includes biological, adoptive, and foster parents. It can also include grandparents and other relatives in parenting roles.
- You must be local to attend Kesem Better Days and Kesem Gatherings, however, you can participate in Club Kesem from anywhere in the world!
How do I register?
- Registration for our pilot programs will be available in December, however, if you are interested in participating, please fill out this form, and we will remind you when registration opens!
- If you have questions about registering or about any of our programs please email megan.polites@kesem.org.
Considerations
What does this mean for your family?
- Our new programs give families even more time to connect with other kids and youth impacted by cancer year round. It also means families who were not interested in attending Camp Kesem or an overnight, sleepaway experience can attend this program and still benefit from the Kesem community.
What if I don't live near a chapter hosting year-round in-person programs?
- Sign up to receive more information about Club Kesem!
Are there any supplies needed to participate in Club Kesem?
- No supplies are needed to participate in Club Kesem! However, your child must be able to access Zoom on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
